Portraits for a Cause!

This weekend I finished a portrait of Luna that I started a couple weeks ago. I haven't really drawn in at least 2 years, so when I took this project on I was a little afraid about how rusty I am. Drawing is just like playing a sport; if you don't practice a lot, you can lose your skill. You might always know how to play that sport, you just might never reach your prime if you stop working at it.

I saw a pet portrait on Instagram, and thought it looked amazing and it motivated me to get back into fine art. I am pretty happy with how the portrait of Luna turned out, but I know I have a lot of room for improvement. I posted the drawing on Luna's Instagram account, and it got a lot of positive feedback. This made me think that people might actually like pet portraits.

With that said, I've decided to sell animal portraits, and to give 10% of proceeds to an animal organization of the purchaser's choice.

If you are interested in a portrait of your pet, email me at brittmaag@yahoo.com and attach a high resolution image of your fur baby.

Photo Friday: Growth Photos

I knew Luna has grown a lot since last September (when Drew and I first got her), but you don't really notice HOW big she's gotten until you compare photos. And that's exactly what I did yesterday. I was reminiscing on some of Luna's puppy photos, and as much as it makes me miss her at that age, I love her just as much now.

Here is Luna at about 3 months:

And here she is now, at a year and 2 months:

Yep, that's my big girl. Love her AND her size :)

Photo Friday: Prescription for a Dog

Forget about Benjamin Franklin's advice about apples keeping the doctor away. Eating apples everyday can get VERY boring! But do you know what doesn't get boring having every day? A dog! Good ole Benny should've advised everyone to "Play with a dog a day, keep the doctor away"! That would be even better, by far.

But in all seriousness, I "workout" more ever since I have had Luna. I go on walks every day (better than my sitting on the couch when I got home prior to being a dog mom). On weekends, I tend to go on longer walks (sometimes hikes) to keep Luna active. I focus on tiring out Luna, and in the process I tire myself out and get some exercise!

Having a dog around also makes you happy (unless you are allergic...then maybe you aren't to happy). They keep you company when no one else is around! You are their number 1 favorite person in the world. How does that not make you happy?

Yes, a dog will cost you a lot of money (there's no doubt about that). But there are definitely ways to keep a dog on a budget. A dog does not need the newest and coolest water dish, just designate one of your own bowls. Or look up a bunch of DIY dog treats on pinterest (or my blog). There are many ways you can save, and in the end it's definitely worth the friendship, health, and love.

I could not imagine my life without my little bugger, Luna. Honestly...It's really hard for me to remember what I did on the weekends when I didn't have Luna. Did I really just watch marathons of Dateline or Property Brothers? How depressing.

The point of this post: A dog will keep your body, mind and spirit healthy! Adopt a dog in need!

Photo Friday: VOTE for Your Favorite!

For today's Photo Friday, I've decided to promote ASPCA and the cats and dogs that have been adopted! They are having a photo contest (submitting photos has ended), and now you can VOTE! Which photo do you absolutely love the most? Here is the one that I chose (though it was quite hard)-- something about a dirty puppy just makes me so happy (as long as I dont have to clean up the mess).

Everybody loves an easy survey, especially on a Friday when you are just ready to go home for the weekend. Well, this survey may not be as easy as you think! There are so many cute photos of dogs and cats, it's a cuteness overload for sure.

The survey is for Rachel Ray's $100K Challenge Photo Contest. "From June 1 to August 31, 50 shelters across the country are competing to break their own adoption records. This Photo Contest showcases some of the adorable animals who were adopted from participating shelters during the first half of the $100K Challenge."

Photo Friday! Adopt, Don't Shop!

I seriously want this T-shirt. But since I hardly ever buy clothes for myself (especially T-shirts) I will just feature it in my "Photo Friday" post. It's a great way to show the different ways to help out with the animal community. There's not really an excuse.

Going off of my Spay/Neuter post, "Adopt, Don't Shop" I find very socially responsible. It can help with Pet Overpopulation and the amount of strays out there. Maybe you don't think that 1 animal you adopt will not make a HUGE difference in the world (or nation) or millions of strays out there. But do you have to make a huge worldly impact? Or can you live with just making an impact on that ONE animal? Save ONE life. Why would you shop for a dog, and pay thousands of dollars for "the perfect breed" when there are tons of dogs out there who need homes already?

I did adopt Luna, not from a shelter, but from my cousin. My cousin's dog had puppies (by accident), and he was going to bring them to the shelter if he did not find homes for the puppies. So, we kinda just took out the middle man (the shelter). I did not expect to have this puppy, I did not shop around for this dog. My cousin posted in Facebook that he had puppies (not for sale, but just to find homes for). Drew and I had already been thinking about getting a dog, so it just seemed like it was meant to be! So we "adopted" Luna.

When I think about situations like my own, I do think that there are "exceptions to the rules" when it comes to adopting/rescuing. If you think about it, a breeder who already has the puppies (whether they had them by accident or on purpose), the animals still need homes. If these puppies don't find homes, a lot of times they are brought to shelters, or just left to be strays. So if you do get a puppy from a breeder who's dog ALREADY had the puppies, I think that is acceptable. What I don't think is right, is when you go to a breeder and tell them that you want a puppy so the breeder breeds the dog for your specific request. That's what I consider shopping.

Another way to "shop" for a dog (this one irritates me the most) is when you only want a specific breed. You know what I think when you say that you want a specific breed? What you are telling me is that you only wear Gucci, or you only drive Lamborghinis. You are a brand specific (or breed specific) SNOB! Yes, I said it. You are a snob, deal with it.

I volunteered at an event (Maddie's Adoption Days), and a couple came up to me and asked if we had any Boxers or Beagles, because that's the ONLY type of dog that they want. REALLY PEOPLE?? Want to know their reasoning behind having a Boxer? (Well I'm gonna tell you anyways)... They wanted a Pitbull, because they love Pitbulls, but their apartment doesn't allow Pitbulls, so they thought Boxer was close enough. I'm not kidding you. That was their reasoning. Oh and the reason they also thought a Beagle would be nice to have, was because it's a good size dog. I about lost my mind. I asked them if they are open to any other breeds, because it's not very often that we get purebreds or very specific breeds like those (mostly Chihuahua and Pitbull mixes). They said no, so I told them (probably a little too harshly) "Good luck then, have a nice day!"

A couple other people that I know that want dogs, I have tried to encourage that they at least look at a local shelter and see what kind of dogs they have there. The response I get is usually: "Rescue dogs are usually harder to train and they are more aggressive and have bad habits." Am I the only sane one around here? Has any one else heard the quote: "There's no such thing as a bad dog, just a bad owner"-John Grogan. Yes, I will admit, that there are some dogs that have a bad experience so they tend to behave differently when they come into new scenarios. But, there are ways to help your dog deal with these problems and TRAIN them through them! And besides, no dog is perfect, like no human is perfect.

And there you have it, the Crazy Dog Lady is at it again, ranting away!

Photo Friday! Truth About Beds

I know I don't have to explain this picture very much, since I'm sure if you have a dog (who is allowed on furniture) you know EXACTLY what this is like. Somehow my 60lb puppy takes up more room on my bed than I do, but I don't want to move and push her off the bed! I guess I will just deal with my side of the bed.

Photo Friday!

Every dog parent knows what this is like. I used to consider a 5 second rule, but now I don't even want it because of the amount of fur that piece of food probably has on it now. I saw a home decor sign the other day that said "Dog fur is a condiment in this house." Ain't that the truth! Usually if something is in my food that's not supposed to be there I freak out (probably a common reaction). However, now I'm so used to there being fur everywhere, when it ends up in my bowl of cereal it's not even a big deal.

Photo of the day was found on Tri-Valley Animal Rescue's FB page
